Boys hockey struggles with mask mandate

By Will Harris

As the boys 2020-21 varsity hockey season kicks off, the team looks forward to picking up right where they left off. The reigning Cape & Island League champs understand the target they have on their back and are prepared to make the most of these unprecedented times. When asked about the team goals for this season, senior forward Marsh Hickman replied, “With all Mass high school state playoffs being called for the year, this has made our team’s main goal to win the league title again.”

As simple as it sounds, this won’t be an easy task. Luckily, returning senior goaltender James Culkins, who was named Cape & Islands League MVP last season, will be back between the pipes. Culkins has been the rock of the team and starting goaltender since eighth grade.

Despite losing multiple key players from last year’s graduating class, some younger incoming players have been putting in strong efforts in practice. Incoming freshmen such as Colby O’Keefe and Michael Culkins have begun to adapt to the new pace of play and the systems run by Coach Scott Corbett. Senior defenceman Alex Freeman has high hopes for the two freshmen and their capability, “I think both of them will make instant impacts. Michael is a smart playmaker who is strong on his edges and Colby is a high energy forward who isn’t afraid to go into the dirty areas.”

Another obstacle that will be faced by the hockey team that all other athletics are facing is the mask mandate. Senior Forward Jack Gammons expands on the mask-wearing, “to be honest, it’s not that great, but we are all getting more used to it the more we play. I think everyone’s accepted this as a reality and we’re just glad to be playing with each other.” With games set to start in January and an uncertain season lying ahead of this team, the boys hockey team is ready to take advantage of every opportunity given to them.
