An ode of appreciation to Nantucket (OpEd)

Growing up on Nantucket I have always had people tell me, “You’re so lucky to live here,” and I always believed this statement, but it never truly meant something to me until this year. This year I applied to college, as most seniors do, and faced the realization that this is my last year as a true Nantucket kid. Realizing this made me think of how close I am to “getting out of here,” which is something that my peers always say they can’t wait to do. As I wrote my resumes and college essays, I had a lot of time to reflect on the past 17 years of my life. This reflection made me realize how truly lucky I am to have been raised in such an amazing place. I have grown into the person I am today because of the great people on this island, and I am forever grateful for the experience of living on Nantucket and being a part of this school system. 

Nantucket is a special place, with a community where everyone truly cares about each other. Because of Nantucket Public Schools, I feel prepared for anything that life throws at me. I have learned how to be kind, how to be a leader, how to work both independently and as a team. I have learned the importance of giving back and giving to the less fortunate. I have learned how to challenge myself, how to see the good, how to think outside of the box, and how to respect everyone. So, as ready as I am for a new adventure, I could never start it without thanking the people that have helped me get to this point. 

To the teachers, the teacher’s assistants, the janitorial staff, the cafeteria staff, the nurses, the administration, the guidance department, the technology department, the school resource officers, the school committee, the parent volunteers, and so many others, thank you. Thank you for your time, dedication, and compassion. It does not go unnoticed, because when I think back on my time here, I dedicate it all to you. I have only positive things to say about each and every teacher I have had at NPS. Every single one has truly cared about both my well-being and my education, and actively supported me in both ways. I have also had the privilege of being the Student Council Representative on the school committee this year. I have been attending and participating in the school committee meetings and I have seen first hand the time, effort, and commitment that this school puts into our lives. I will never forget how I felt after attending my first meeting. I was in awe. In awe of everything they were doing to not only support students, but improve our education and even our lives. This experience inspired me to appreciate everything that I have gotten to experience in this school system. 

To all of you still in high school, I would encourage you to remember my advice. My advice is to appreciate all of the people that support you. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, or for help. Don’t be afraid to try something new. Believe in yourself. Don’t be afraid to say no. Don’t be afraid to say yes. Make the most of your classes, because they are so valuable, and will set you up for success. Be friendly to everyone. Reach out to the people you know are struggling. Challenge yourself. Always be honest with yourself and others. Make memories, because it truly does go by too fast. Most importantly, remember that there are good days, and that there are bad days. Don’t let either one change your view of yourself.

And lastly, thank you to Veritas. Thank you for giving me a place to grow both as a writer and journalist, but also as a person. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with such intelligent, dedicated, and passionate young adults. I have been inspired by each and every one of you. You all have the brightest futures ahead of you, and I would wish you good luck, but I know you don’t need it.
